The process
Site Immersion & Context Study
Visited Bhuj and stayed on-site for 2–3 days to understand climate, culture, wind patterns, and the post-earthquake condition of the site, previously used as a construction debris dump.Program Development
Based on contextual needs, developed a program combining cultural preservation and public engagement, including workshops (Ajrakh & block printing), classrooms, library, cafeteria, and a central courtyard with retail.Material Exploration – Debris Wall
Reclaimed and treated construction waste from the site to create debris walls, transforming a post-disaster residue into a sustainable building material.Climate-Responsive Strategy
Designed passive cooling systems using buffer zones with plantations and moist earthen pots that cool incoming air naturally, eliminating the need for mechanical air conditioning.Spatial Planning & Buffering
Organized spaces with transitional buffers around built areas to regulate temperature, reduce heat gain, and enhance comfort.Orientation & Environmental Response
Oriented the built form to capture prevailing winds while minimizing harsh solar exposure, ensuring the building responds sensitively to Bhuj’s hot climate.
